Is Julia a good partner for Winston?  Why or why not?

Do you think that Winston and Julia would give up the other to save themselves?

Did it surprise you that Mr. Charrington was a part of the thought police?  Why or why not?

Have you ever been in a situation where you were betrayed?  How was your reaction similar to Winston's?

Excellent set of questions.

  1. Yes it did surprise me that Mr. Charrington was a part of the though police. I think it surprised me because Orwell created this kind of friendly relationship between Winston and Charrington. Orwell made it seem as if Charrington could be trusted because it's almost unheard of telescreens and thought police in prole territory. This comes show that no one can be trusted.

    1. I agree that it was very surprising especially because he opened up his home to Winston and in many ways supported his endeavors. I think it is rather counter intuitive to help someone only to turn them in later.

  2. I think Julia is a great partner for Winston because they help each other get through the pain. Before Winston met Julia he was walking aimlessly around town hating his life and big brother. After he met Julia he began to see Joy in the world and was happy. I think this was monumental not only for Winston but also for 1984, a book that focused so much on the negative to find light.

    1. I totally agree with this. They do make a wonderful pair because their beliefs and actions are very similar to one another.

    2. I also agree with Tyler's statement because although their lives were still somewhat mysterious to one another, they did somehow bring joy to each others lives. I think it was that they found a way to rebel against Big Brother together and have fun doing it.

    3. I disagree with Tyler's statement. Julia and Winston were not meant to be from the start. While Winston's purpose of rebel was because of his hatred towards the government and desire for freedom, Julia's purpose of rebellion was for her satisfaction and love towards Winston. They did not start rebelling against the government for the same reasons even though they were together relying on each other throughout their journey. However, the fact that their final goal did not match from the start set them off. So, the result of Julia and Winston's relationship perfectly matches the original theme of the book. Pain, betrayal, totalitarian government, and impossible love/independence.

  3. I have been betrayed from my friends, although the outcome wasn't too different from Winston's. Even though O'Brien arrested Winston, Winston still considered him to be his friend, his savior. He loved him with all his soul. I was the same. Even though I felt betrayed, I still really liked him, so I looked forward to seeing him another day.

  4. Yes, Julia is a great partner for Winston. Because they both want to Rebel against Big Brother and to do so they have to love eachother in a manor that is defiant against Big Brother.

  5. Julia is a good partner for Winston because he needed to have someone give him a purpose, and that's what happened when he met Julia. She played a huge role in Winston defying Big Brother because they both had the same passion, which was knowing they had "beaten" Big Brother.- Kiana Beauty Block 8

  6. It was not as surprising to me that Mr Charrington ended up being a member of the thought police. He was too open to Winston which was what made me suspicious. No one in this world can be that nice. Don't trust easily, you never know how the true intentions of a person.

  7. In my opinion i think that Julia is a good partner for him because they both had viewed big brother the same way and they both wanted to put it to an end and they both committed thought crimes and they weren't afraid to commit it as long as they were going through it together

  9. I think Julia is a great partner for Winston because she competes him. she holds him together. With out her Winston is just a sad man walking around lifeless with no meaning to his life.
