  2. Mr. Charrington is an old man who has a second hand store in the prole district. Winston first meets him in book one when he sells him the journal. He later on rents out a room above his shop to Winston and Julia that does not have a telescreen in it so they are able to be only with each other, with out being watched by Big Brother. Later on we find out he is actually a member of the though police and has been watching them this whole time.

  4. Mr. Charrington An old man who runs a secondhand store in the prole district. Kindly and encouraging, Mr. Charrington seems to share Winston’s interest in the past. He also seems to support Winston’s rebellion against the Party and his relationship with Julia, since he rents Winston a room without a telescreen in which to carry out his affair. But Mr. Charrington is not as he seems. He is a member of the Thought Police.

    1. I agree to what Joe had said about how Julia loves Winston. Yes, she does love him, but it is the love that helps them rebel against The Party. They both have thought that their love is a political act. It is a way to stand up against the party, to start a revolution, an attack to The Party.

  7. Mr. Charrington turns out to be a faithful member of Oceania's party and a thought police. He was perceived as a kind old man running second hand shop who would support Julia and Winston's rebellion. However at the end of the book, just like the original theme of the book, he turns out to be the thought police and is the main role that plays to catch Winston and Julia committing crimes and being unfaithful party members.

    1. I was surprised to find out that he was a Thought Police because he was the person who gave Winston the journal.

  8. Throughout the book, Mr. Charrington was known as the owner of the second hand shop. Winston expressed several times throughout the book that he suspected that Mr. Charrington was a member of the Brotherhood. He rented the room where Julia and Winston had the affair, also he was the one who sold he journal to Winston. However, he is not as kind as he seems. When Julia and Winston are detained by the Thought Police, they discover that Mr. Charrington has been spying on them. They hear his voice behind the print of St. Clement's church and he says to them: "you are the dead."

  9. Mr. Charrington is the old man that sells stuff in a second hand store and it was the place that Winston got his Diary from to write his thought crimes down in.
