Group One Book Club 3 Questions: Brooke, Becca, Brandt, Bridgett

What do you think O'Brien's motive is when meeting with Winston?

Why does Winston believe he killed his mother?

Why did Julia leave when O'Brien gave her and Winston the wine?

What do you think will happen next in O'Brien's and Winston"s relationship?

  1. I do not think O'brien is very trustworthy so I believe he has an alternative motive besides giving Winston the newspeak dictionary. Winstons original hunch about Julia was wrong. Since he thought she was a spy but ended up being very rebellious. This makes me think that Winston is not very good at reading people so his idea that O'Brien is very rebellious will most likely end up wrong. Also O'Brien tells Winston that they will meet in the place of no darkness is foreshadowing a meeting in a not very pleasant place. Such as room 101 but Winston is clueless to all of this.

    2. I agree that O'Brian is a possible danger, but Winston is really lonely. I think that Winston will end up trusting O'Brian because it would mean that he is not alone revolting/fighting big brother.

  2. I think that Winston and O'Brian will continue to bond. Especially because they have some of the same ideas. In this society where you can't really trust anyone I think they are happy that they found each other and will most likely pursue a relationship further.

  3. I have a feeling that O'Brien might be somehow like Mr. Charrington. 1984's theme is mostly about betrayal and totalitarian government. It doesn't make sense to me that Winston would find a rebellion party that easily right when he started actually rebelling. There must be a hidden purpose that O'Brien has, and I think his motive is to catch disloyal party members by acting like he's on their side.
