What immediate connections to real life communism do you see? i.e. Nazism. Elaborate.
If you knew you were destined for death like Winston, what would you do?
Do you think that people are actually dumb enough to believe the lies spit at them? i.e. twenty grams of chocolate. Elaborate.
I do not think all of the people are dumb enough to believe the lies they are told. I think people choose to ignore the blatant discrepancies between truth and alternative facts they are told by the Ministry of Truth. I feel like,m for some people, when they have a lot at stake--homes, kids to raise, food to put on the table, health care, and the like--tend to conform and comply with the status quo and do what they are told instead of standing up for themselves. It is only when you have nothing to lose that you are truly free. I can't remember who said that, but I like it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this statement. Perhaps not all the people are dumb, I'm sure some are, but instead they choose to look away from their reality. By putting full faith and reliance into their government, they experience a bit a freedom from worry and choices. They are able to live their lives and believe that everything is in a good state. This allows them to focus on more important things in the community.
DeleteI also agree with this. In many ways we do the same thing. For example as children we blindly follow our parents and sometimes even into adulthood. I think in 1984 many of the people follow in this same way because it feels safe to them. We know from the text that there was a very strict hierarchy that enforced strong disciplines on those who would not comply. So with this in mind it would make sense that people would turn a blind eye in order to avoid any negative outcome.
DeleteIn the book, society is clearly divided by class. In Germany during WW2, The Nazi party attempted to segregate their country because of religious differences. Jewish individuals were required to wear yellow badges to announce their differences. This is similar to the overalls the outer party wears to show their importance. Another similarity is the control the government has over the people. Big brother is constantly watching over the citizens of Oceania and has complete control. Adolf Hitler eventually took total control over Germany and also created a false reality.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this but the young spies in the book also represent the Hilter youth from the Nazi party. They are similar because from a young age they are forced to develop certain ideals and morals.

DeleteI disagree with this. Dictatorship concept is indeed similar to North Korea and Nazi during WW2. However, in Oceania, they are not trying to divide people and segregate individuals but the government is trying to make everyone equal(equally submissive to the party). The citizens of oceania wear overalls to have less discrimination, and the fact that we don't know if big brother is real, since he doesn't actually show up in the book makes me wonder if Oceania is there to discriminate certain groups of people. It just seems to me that they want equal loyal members of the party.
DeleteIf I were destined to death like Winston I would most likely continue to commit the thought crimes, but I wouldn't go crazy with committing crimes. I would like to live as long as a I possibly could, before spies catch me, so I would continue with my everyday life in hopes of not dying that day.
ReplyDeleteI think I would probably do the same and continue to commit crimes. Although I would possibly go crazy with the thought crimes just because I would not want to live in constant fear that the thought police would be at my door to capture me. Therefore I would commit many crimes in the shortest amount of time.
