Group Eight:  Kiana, Samantha C. Alyssa, Zander, Inez

Why does Winston hate all women?

How would you react if you couldn't remember your childhood or birthday or even dates?

How do you think school as a whole would be if thought crime was set in place?  As well as face crime?

What does Winston think about INGSOC?

What do you think it would be like not having books and/or being able to have memories?

  1. I don't think Winston hates women parse, but rather the ideas created within the 1984 society. We know from the reading that Winston is a very hormonal person. In a society that forbids love because it views it as a sin he is forced to hide his feelings. As a result it comes out as hate. He hates the fact that he loves what he should hate. This is why he describes such vulgar and aggressive acts towards women because it is the only way he can process his feelings in a society that goes against his human nature to love. Besides later in the piece when he meets Julia we realize that he doesn't dislike women because he wants to marry her and "become an old married couple" as he put it. So rather his hatred is stemmed from the society in 1984 rather then women themselves.

    1. I agree with you, but earlier in the book he does mention that he hates women, because all the women that have been in his life have left him. For instance Winston's mom left him when he was little, and his wife Katherine left him because they weren't able to successfully perform their "duty to the Party." I do agree that Winston learns to not hate women as the novel progresses, but in the beginning he most definitely did hate women, or he came across that way.

  2. If I could not remember my childhood memories or even dates, I probably would not act any different because you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If we all grew up this way, it would be normal to not have any memories or remember what you eve did yesterday. Everything would be present or future tense and it would be hard, almost impossible to have a relationship with anybody, along with disliking anyone.

    1. I agree its not like we would know the difference of not having the memories. So it would just be normal and most people wouldn't question it because it wouldnt be a problem, it would just be normal. But since we do i think that life would be sad and we wouldnt learn anything from it because we wouldnt remember having lived it. -Jack Carroll
