Winston's character has proven to be rebellious and in disagreement with the Party rules. He first commits a though crime and despite the guilt that this action brings to him, he decides to record all his thoughts in a dairy as a form of protest and also the diary serves as a tool for self-expression and the ability to think for himself. Winston is very aware that if the Party were to found out about his dairy, the consequences would be extremely severe but he seems to pay not care about the deathly consequences. One of the evidence that the books provides us is when he repeatedly writes in his diary the phrase. "Down with Big Brother." Winston realizes that he does not want to follow the rules that the Party forces on the people of Oceania, he is aware that he has the freedom of thinking whatever he wants to, and because knows that he can't express his feelings and thoughts out loud, he goes to the dairy.
I agree with you. In this society that is so strict on what you can and can't do it must be hard to express yourself, especially being a person with so many emotions. ( which we know Winston has) Keeping a diary both allows Winston to express himself but also allows him to rebel against the government and controlling power that he despises.
I agree that Winston has it to rebel and let out how he feels in writting. It helps him feel a little better about the things he cant say out loud or to other people. -Jack Carroll
I think that julia effects winston by giving him a chance to harmlessly rebel against the party. She can distract him and make him fall in love with her so that way his attention can be on her, which is what she likes. -Jack Carroll
I agree with you in the sense that she is only effecting him in order to rebel against the party. However, she is effecting him in more of way than that if they end up falling in love, that is the ultimate thought crime and if they get caught there are serious consequences. So she effects him the way that they are risking their lives to be together.
Julia affects Winston by being a chance for him to rebel against the government and providing him a reliance/relaxation with the fact that she equally wants to rebel. Julia is the major factor that Winston gains feelings of independence because Winston feels as if he is a independent individual while having sexual encounters(rebelling against the government) with Julia. So, Julia is providing Winston a chance to stand up for himself.
Why does Winston keep a diary?

I agree, the only way that Winston has to express his hate and frustration for the party is to write in his journal. He needs it to keep himself sane.
