Group 7 Book Club 3 Celia, Carly, Erik, Cody, Kayden

Do you trust O'Brien?

How many people do you think are a part of the Brotherhood?

Do you think they are going to get caught?  How?  Why?

What is the significance of Julia wearing makeup?

  1. I believe that the significance of Julia wearing makeup is so that she can feel like a woman. Julia has always worn the same overalls every member of the Party, so she doesn't feel human. Julia wants to impress Winston and show him that she is beautiful and not just another member of the Party. She wants to feel like a woman and normal person at least once in her life.

    1. I agree, I think Julia likes to stand out and be her own person, and rebel in her own small ways. -Jack Carroll

    2. I agree. Having to wear same clothes as other people and not being allowed to be a unique individual is a pain. The significance is that Julia is rebelling against the party by being herself and trying to impress her man. Makeup gives Julia a sense of womanliness and independence of being a beautiful loved woman while the government is preventing all woman and man from being their own individuals.

    3. It's interesting how the author includes makeup in the book. It clearly has an important message because, as you said, Julia wants to feel normal and makeup helps her with that.

  2. I do think that they will get caught. Winston and Julia are not very sly about their hatred towards the party. Also when Winston speaks poorly about the party to people he is unaware about who he is talking to, so he does not know what their title is in society.

    1. Even though I finished the book, I just wanted to add onto this. Because the reason why I knew they would get caught isn't too much about them not being very sly, but rather at the very beginning of the book, Winston tells us he will be arrested. He doesn't warn us he might be arrested, but he knows it's going to happen as soon as he commits thoughtcrime.

  3. I think Julia wears makeup so that she can stand out to people and show them that she is a free spirit and does her own thing. its her way to rebel a little and feel good. -Jack Carroll

  4. From the start of the book I have never trusted O'Brien. Even though Winston did and looked up to him because he thought he was apart of this so called Brotherhood that did not agree with the societies expectations, I never had a good feeling about him. He seemed like one of those guys that had a huge secrete and was a two faced kind of person. I just had a gut feeling he was not to be trusted.

    1. I agree with Maddy. There was always something off about him, he never seemed right. Winston never really found out where he thoughts were with Big Brother or his job or even just details about who he is. Although Winston always thought he seemed like a good guy that was on his side about rebelling against Big Brother, he did not turnout to be that way as Winston eventually finds out.
